Brave Troubadours is a live concert and educational series, showcasing today's frontline musical change agents. Episodes include 60 minutes of song, captivating videos and music-driven activism centered around the issues of our time (civil rights, climate advocacy, poverty and health). You’ll enjoy intimate 15-minute sets of music and stories from each artist, getting to know their talents, and the inspiration behind their work and community impact. Join audience members from around the country and let these amazing creatives refresh your faith in a kinder, more unified world, through the power of music.

In May's episode we will explore the past, present and future of South Texas Tejano/conjunto music with talented and visionary artists including Juan Tejeda, Nicolas Valdez and an exploration of the legacy of las Tesoros de San Antonio with the Esperanza Peace Center.

The Esperanza Center will share the musical experience of Blanca "Blanquita Rosa" Rodríguez, Beatriz "La Paloma del Norte" Llamas, Rita Vidaurri “La Calandria” (1925-2019), and Janet “Perla Tapatia” Cortez (1931-2014) from the 40s, 50s and 60s, as members of las Tesoros de San Antonio, a group of elder women performers who reemerged in the last few years to preserve Mexican and bicultural musical expressions through singing and storytelling. Activist/musician/organizer/scholar Juan Tejeda will discuss current trends in conjunto and Tejano music and share the historical roots of South Texas music. Our third guest is Nicolás Valdez, a Chicano musician/songwriter/playwright/poet who performs with Los Nahuatlatos, a group of musicians with deep roots to their Xicano-Indigenous heritage.

Director of Programs and San Antonio native, Verónica Pérez-Picasso will join Liz Stookey Sunde, Executive Director of Music to Life, to emcee this exciting event.
