As part of our Spring Appeal, Music to Life is hosting an online workshop, The Gig-Ready Social Change Musician – coming up on July 21 at 12pm ET. Our own Carla Gover – a brilliant folk artist and MCA Academy graduate – will lead this 2.5-hour online session. She’ll help you tighten up your EPK, polish your bios, and build a social strategy that actually works. It’s all about building a bookable brand, so you can spend less time on the hustle and more time on the music. Full workshop description below!
Registration is open to the public and tickets are $50. You can secure your spot here.
This workshop is free for Music to Life Juried Artists (suggested donation of $20; donation link here). You can find the free registration access code in your email inbox.
If you’re not a JA (find out more about our JA roster here) don’t worry! You can still attend the workshop as part of the general public, or apply to our JA roster if you’re a musician changemaker.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Workshop Description
Stop “tail-chasing” and get your professional business assets together. Many talented musicians focus on the wrong things early on, neglecting the basic tools a venue booker needs to actually hire them. If a presenter can’t find your promotional assets within thirty seconds, or if your materials look amateur, you are losing the gig. In the music industry, nobody hits you in the head with a “magic wand of legitimacy”—you have to hit your own head with your own handmade wand. And it’s easier to feel “legit” when you know you have all the foundations in place. That’s what we’ll work on together!
Since you’re a social change artist who cares about making music that engages the issues you’re passionate about, your marketing materials need to reflect that. The world needs your voice more than ever right now, and we’ll have a special focus on creating materials that highlight your values and set you apart.
This 2.5-hour workshop is an implementation-focused lab designed to move you from “starving artist” to a professional ready for the stage. We won’t just talk about what you need; we will spend dedicated time in a group setting creating these assets so you can walk away with a completed toolkit and immediate feedback.
You’ll also leave with a roadmap of what to keep working on after our time together is through.
What We Will Create Together (Implementation Lab):
- The Tech Stuff: Draft a professional tech rider and stage plot that makes a sound tech’s life easier.
- The Narrative: Craft your three essential bios (Full-page, 150-word, and 75-word) adapted for various lengths and professional uses.
- Brand Identity: Establish simple branding basics for your business, so you’ll have what you need to get started AND to implement further when we’re done.
- The Professional EPK: We’ll work on the core assets you need to have in your Electronic Press Kit (plus how and where to create it) as well as a customized list that you can keep working on after our time is over.
What We Will Review:
- Email List Foundations: Setting up your list and welcome sequences to turn casual interest into a loyal fan base.
- Website Essentials: Where to build your site and a checklist of exactly what to put on it to help bookers find what they need instantly.
- Social Media: We’ll touch on the basics of social posting, and how it can fit into your personal marketing plan.
