Amalia Ortiz

Amalia Ortiz is a spoken word performer who incorporates music into performances. She appeared on three seasons of Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry on HBO and the NAACP Image Awards on FOX. She was awarded the 2020 American Book Award for Oral Literature. She founded Las Hijas de la Madre, a queer Chicanx feminist punk band which first formed to perform her punk musical, “The Cancíon Cannibal Cabaret,” which toured Texas, and performed at the Latinx Visions Conference at University of New Mexico, and the 12th International Conference on Chicano Literature and Latino Studies in Barcelona, Spain. Other notable performances include Luminaria 2019, International Women's Day March 2024, Queer Voices 2024, University of North Texas, Texas Woman's University, Northwest Vista College, and Trinity University. She received a CIty of San Antonio Individual Artist Grant and a Democratizing Racial Justice Artist Residency through the Mellon Foundation to complete her latest project/album, "Punkera Diatribes."
