Joy Zimmerman

Joy Zimmerman is a folk and acoustic roots singer-songwriter creating community through music. Her latest album, Where the Light Lives, debuted at #6 on the Folk Alliance International Chart, adding to a growing list of accolades. A multi-instrumentalist and queer artist with a rich, clear voice, Joy blends insightful songwriting, fiddle tunes, and storytelling into memorable performances. Dani Goodband of Lakeside Music calls her “a show any host would line up to present.”

Joy began violin lessons before kindergarten. Many miles of classical music later, she picked up a guitar, found her voice, and reinvented herself as a touring singer-songwriter. While discovering a talent for songwriting, Joy mined her life and former social work experience. She has been awarded an Artist as Activist grant from Mid-America Arts Alliance, ten Walnut Valley Music Festival NewSong wins, and an American Songwriter Lyric Contest Honorable Mention. Performing solo or with other musicians, Joy’s music is “vivid and alive, tender and poignant, and altogether a gift for the listener” (Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg, Kansas Poet Laureate Emeritus). Joy has been featured on folk radio, a wide variety of stages, and numerous conferences. Her recordings include eight albums of original music and one live performance.

Joy is a current board member of the Folk Alliance Region Midwest, an ArtistINC alumnus, a Heartland Song Network Artist of the Month, and Artist of Note with the Humanities Community Outreach Series. A former board member of Transformative Language Arts Network, Joy co-chaired their annual Power of Words conference.
